Luxury Basement Renovations: Custom Bars, Theaters & Entertaining Spaces
Luxury Basement Renovations: Bringing Elevated Design Below Grade
When most people think of Ventures, they think of resort-style backyards, custom pools, and unforgettable outdoor living spaces. But the same design philosophy that shapes our exteriors also informs some of our most exciting work indoors, particularly in finished basements.
A well-designed basement is more than extra square footage. It’s an opportunity to extend the character of your home, create space for entertaining, and add layers of function and beauty that simply don’t exist on the main level. From full bars and wine cellars to home theaters, gyms, and spa-inspired bathrooms, today’s luxury basements are thoughtful, intentional, and downright beautiful.
This month, we’re highlighting two completed interior projects that showcase the full range of what’s possible, along with a look at what’s coming next.
Before & After
Underground
The Underground basement was designed to function as a complete extension of the home, a space that supports entertaining, relaxing, and family life in equal measure.
At its core is a fully equipped bar and lounge that anchors the basement as a true gathering space. A fireside seating area creates a cozy backdrop for conversation, movie nights, or unwinding at the end of the day, while the adjacent wine cellar adds both function and a sense of occasion. Thoughtful lighting throughout the space helps define each zone, from the bar and dining area to the lounge and circulation spaces, allowing the basement to feel layered and intentional rather than segmented.
Beyond entertaining, the basement includes a private gym and a full bathroom, making it just as practical for daily use as it is for hosting. Tucked beneath the stairs is a charming children’s playhouse, a whimsical detail that brings a sense of imagination and warmth to an otherwise sophisticated space and ensures the basement truly serves every member of the family.
Material selections reinforce the atmosphere without overpowering it. Stone veneer accents, rich brick details, and statement lighting add depth and character, while built-in storage, including a hidden closet concealed behind a bookcase, keeps the space organized and effortless to use.
Underground is a perfect example of how a finished basement can be both highly functional and deeply personal, designed not just to look beautiful, but to be lived in fully.
Before
Below Buchanan
Below Buchanan is a finished basement renovation that feels as light, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed as one of our outdoor living spaces, and that’s no coincidence. We were first hired to design and build this client’s backyard retreat: Buchanan. Soon after, they returned to Ventures to transform their basement as well.
The finished basement unfolds into three primary zones: a bar and fireside lounge, a home gym, and a bathroom, with additional integrated storage throughout. A double row of structural support pillars dictated a long, narrow layout, turning potential limitations into opportunities for custom solutions. A built-in dining booth is tucked seamlessly between the beams, saving space while adding character. The same thoughtful approach is applied to built-in storage, which occupies areas that would otherwise go unused.
Details elevate the entire space. Brass hardware ties together cabinetry, fixtures, and shelving. White marble surfaces add a touch of glamour across the bar, bathroom, and dining table. White brick appears in both the fireplace and back bar, while exposed ceilings painted black maintain height and contrast, softened by sections of drop ceiling trimmed with wide wood molding.
Being invited back to work on a second major project for the same client is always meaningful. It’s a testament to trust, collaboration, and the value of thoughtful design carried throughout the home, inside and out.
What’s Coming Next?
We’re currently putting the finishing touches on several interior projects that will soon join our portfolio.
Maple (In Progress)
Designed as a multifunctional family entertainment space, this basement blends performance, relaxation, and hospitality into a cohesive environment with incredible attention to detail. At its heart is a custom-built stage, complete with a ballet barre, creating a dedicated place for the children to rehearse, perform, and play. Entertainment continues when the space transforms into a karaoke stage, where color-changing LED lighting syncs with the music to create a high-energy, immersive experience. When it’s time to shift from recital to movie night, a retractable screen and projector transform the space into a full home theater. It’s the kind of feature that makes the basement feel like a destination, equally suited for family fun or hosting friends.
Balancing the playful elements is a full bar and wine cellar, designed with the same level of craftsmanship and attention to detail found throughout our outdoor projects. Beaneath the stairs a hidden door leads to the cozy den with a desk and custom built reading knook. The lower level also includes a private guest bedroom and a spa-like bathroom featuring a steam room with heated bench seating, turning the basement into a comfortable retreat for overnight guests or a place to unwind after a long day. These spaces anchor the basement as a true entertaining hub, offering function, beauty, and flexibility.
Maple proves that a basement doesn’t have to serve a single purpose. With thoughtful design, it can support creativity, connection, and relaxation, all within one beautifully composed space. We can’t wait to share the finished space very soon and reveal how all of these elements come together in real life.
Nine (In Progress)
Nine is a perfect example of how a strong design partnership can evolve over time. Our work with this client began outdoors, where we designed and built their backyard retreat. You can explore that project here.
From there, the relationship grew. We were next brought on to renovate all of the home’s upstairs bathrooms, reimagining them with the same level of intention, craftsmanship, and material consideration found in our exterior work. With those renovations now complete, we’ve recently finished designing an incredible new finished basement, with construction set to begin this year.
This upcoming basement will continue the home’s cohesive design language, balancing function and atmosphere while creating a space tailored for entertaining, relaxation, and everyday living. Renderings reveal a layout that feels purposeful and elevated, proving that great design doesn’t stop at the main living levels of a home.
Being rehired for multiple projects by the same client is the highest compliment we can receive. It speaks to trust in both our design process and our ability to translate a client’s vision across spaces, styles, and phases, building not just beautiful environments, but long-term relationships.
Why Interior Renovations Deserve the Same Design Attention
Basements are often treated as secondary spaces, but when designed properly, they can become some of the most used and loved areas of the home. Whether it’s a place to gather, relax, work out, or unwind, a luxury basement should feel cohesive with the rest of the house and tailored to how your family lives.
At Ventures, we approach interior renovations the same way we approach outdoor living spaces: through custom design, thoughtful planning, and meticulous execution. The goal is never just to finish a space, but to elevate it.
If you’ve been thinking about transforming your basement into something more intentional, more functional, and more beautiful, these projects offer a glimpse into what’s possible when design leads the way.
