Big Ideas for Small Backyards
Three Incredible Outdoor Living Spaces Under 3,500 Square Feet
Having a small backyard doesn’t mean you can’t create your dream outdoor living space. In fact, some of our most creative builds came from working with limited square footage. With more than a decade of experience designing and building custom outdoor living spaces, we’ve learned how to make every square foot count—without compromising on beauty, functionality, or luxury.
“Designing within a small footprint pushes us to be more creative. It’s about layering features in a way that feels natural, not cramped. With the right approach, even a 1,500-square-foot yard can feel like a private resort—complete with a pool, kitchen, lounge, and space to play.”
You Can Have It All
The essential ingredients of an unforgettable outdoor living space are the same no matter the property size: an inground pool or spa, a fire feature, an outdoor kitchen, a shade structure, and room for entertaining. On larger lots, you may also see athletic courts, expansive patios, and multiple lounges. But on smaller properties, creativity becomes the design driver.
At Ventures, we love the challenge of creating “small but mighty” backyards. Here are three of our favorite projects—ranging from just 1,500 to 3,500 square feet—that prove you really can have it all.
#1 Division: Downtown Property with a Plunge Pool and Putting Green
At only 1,500 square feet, Division is a masterclass in maximizing space. The oversized gunite spa with a sheer descent waterfall serves as the focal point, offering both relaxation and drama. Surrounding the spa is a clever, grass-block-inspired patio with a built-in fire pit, sitting wall, and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen.
A custom pergola shelters the lounge and mounted all-weather TV, creating a stylish hub for entertaining. And just beyond, a five-hole putting green transforms the limited footprint into a multi-use playground. Proof that you don’t need acres to enjoy resort-style living.

#2 Amityville: Plymouth Home with a Pool, Putting Green and Fireside Lounge
Measuring just under 3,000 square feet, Amityville manages to fit a full-size inground pool and spillover spa without sacrificing charm or functionality. The pool stretches across the property, bordered by deck jets that add playful energy.
Along the side yard, Ventures transformed what could have been wasted space into a compact putting green. The design also includes an outdoor shower, perfect for rinsing off after a swim, and an inviting lounge anchored by a vine-covered pergola. The fire pit becomes the natural gathering place, adding warmth and ambiance to this cleverly designed backyard.

#3 Trailwood: A Private Five-Star Resort in Tight Quarters
While Trailwood sits on a half-acre lot, the house’s placement left just 3,500 square feet for the backyard. With the rear property line only 30 feet from the house, space was tight. But constraints often inspire creativity.
The result is a dynamic, L-shaped custom pool that fits snugly behind the setback while maintaining a sense of openness. The covered porch shelters a chef’s-grade outdoor kitchen with bar seating, while the patio offers a mix of design features: a fire pit, paver inlays for chaise lounges, pedestals for fire-and-water bowls, and a dining area arranged in a striking herringbone pattern. Beyond the patio, a private putting green completes the resort-like feel.
As designer Jake Steward explains: “We gave the pool its unique L-shape to fit behind the setback while making it dynamic and not feel squished against the house.” The result feels expansive, elegant, and effortless—despite the strict limitations.

Rethinking What’s Possible in a Small Backyard
These three projects prove that square footage doesn’t define what’s possible. With careful planning and creative design, even compact backyards can become dream-worthy outdoor living spaces. From plunge pools to pergolas, putting greens to fire features, the right mix of elements can transform a limited lot into a multifunctional retreat your family will enjoy for years.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fit a pool in a small backyard?
Yes. With the right design, you can add a plunge pool, cocktail pool, or even a full-size inground pool in a compact space. Features like sun shelves and spas maximize enjoyment without taking up extra room.
What features should I prioritize in a small backyard?
Focus on multifunctional elements: a spa that doubles as a pool, a pergola that shades both dining and lounge areas, or a fire feature that acts as a centerpiece. Layering features helps make the most of limited square footage.
Can I have an outdoor kitchen in a small space?
Absolutely. Compact outdoor kitchens can be designed with built-in grills, refrigeration, and bar seating. Clever layouts maximize function without crowding the space.
How do you make a small backyard feel bigger?
Smart design details like L-shaped pools, integrated seating walls, and open sightlines help a yard feel larger. Using consistent materials also creates visual flow, giving the impression of more space.
Are athletic courts possible in small yards?
Yes. Even compact spaces can host putting greens, bocce courts, or half-court basketball layouts. Tailored designs ensure recreation without overwhelming the yard.
