Manhattan

The Manhattan Project in Canton, MI is a striking example of how an uninspired backyard can be completely transformed while keeping the existing pool. Before this remodel, the property featured a fenced fiberglass pool surrounded by concrete and a small prefab playset. Functional but dated, the space lacked character, style, and purpose. Ventures was brought in to modernize the design, add functionality, and create a backyard worth gathering in.

Unlike most of our projects, where we build new gunite pools, Manhattan is our first portfolio feature showcasing a fiberglass pool renovation. We preserved the existing pool and coping, then reimagined the surrounding space with a new patio in brushed concrete slabs accented by Techo Bloc Mika pavers in Onyx Black. The combination of materials creates a clean, modern look and instantly elevated the pool’s visual impact.

Beside the pool, a custom linear gas-fueled fire pit fabricated in-house anchors a cozy lounge area. A few steps away, the new poolside pavilion provides covered comfort with stone veneer walls, a tongue-and-groove ceiling, recessed lighting, overhead heaters, and a ceiling fan. The pavilion’s gas fireplace, topped with a mounted all-weather TV, turns the space into a cozy lounge, even on crisp autumn evenings. Just outside, a dedicated dining area extends the pavilion’s function for al fresco dining.

Between the pool and the home, we designed and built a U-shaped outdoor kitchen with granite countertops and a raised bar ledge that wraps around three sides, providing generous bar seating. Fully equipped with a grill, refrigeration, and ample storage, this kitchen is as functional as it is stylish—perfect for entertaining poolside.

Brushed concrete walkways with Mika paver inlays connect the home to the pool and kitchen, tying the entire design together with continuity and modern detail. The result is a backyard that feels balanced, purposeful, and beautiful from every angle.

The Manhattan project proves that you don’t need to start over to achieve an extraordinary outdoor living space. For homeowners with an existing fiberglass or vinyl pool that still functions, a custom remodel can completely redefine the backyard—adding beauty, luxury, and modern functionality without replacing the shell.

What was once a dated and uninspired yard is now a vibrant retreat with fire, water, shade, and gathering spaces—all centered around the original pool.
